There’s no shortage of vintage, previously loved, and antique shops like Five and Dime Vintage in Oakland. And we value every one of these shop local treasures. Interestingly, this category continues to grow in relevancy as wise-beyond-their-years Gen Yers, Millennials, and other new-school generations realize something us old folks did not. They know that they can’t continue to consume new products at the current rate. Of course, it’s just not sustainable for the survival of the planet. So, these younger generations are not so bedazzled by Corporate America and their superficial brands.
And so it is, there’s a tiny space for local indie merchant heroines like Terrie of Five and Dime Vintage. Terrie is a proud single mom, vintage curator, and Piedmont Avenue proprietor. She works hard every day to score unique finds by treasure hunting at estate sales, garage sales, and other events in which older generations unceremoniously dump their valuable pieces of history.
Indeed, her labor of Oakland Vintage love has produced a dynamic shop in a charming — almost secret — Piedmont Ave courtyard. She lovingly and carefully collects tons of little vintage surprises from clothes to curios and everything in between. She even carries records now. One just never knows what one will find on a quick trip to this eclectic space.
And on our visit, we too had a happy discovery: Terrie is the best find of all. She’s all warmth and authenticity. And, there’s something about her love of being an independent mom, small biz owner, collector, and Oaklander that just makes you want to root for her. She’s vintage Oakland Indie Merchant to the core. And that is so very special.
