There are innumerable occasions for flowers: birthdays, anniversaries of any kind, and the usual holidays are the typical reasons. But, our favorite type of purchases are the random “just because” moments.
And, there are so many good reasons to shop local for flowers.
First, there’s usually a florist or two in every neighborhood. So they are definitely a convenient stop at lunch or on the way home from work. And, you’re sure to get fresher, better quality flowers–every time–than what you’ll find at retail chains. But, it’s also so much more of a meaningful experience.
So, when I met Dan Lasack of City Bloom Flowers, I realized that neighborhood florists are like “floral bartenders.” They get to know you. They listen to your stories about your loved ones. They often participate in making your milestones special. And, they produce one-of-a-kind floral cocktails for you or your recipient.
And Dan created a special one for me the afternoon I visited his shop. We chatted about his business, the challenges of being a local indie merchant in Oakland, LOCALMOTIV, and life in general. I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful the flowers were. Still, it was a rather spontaneous decision to buy a dozen long stem roses to give to a very special LOCALMOTIV person who had just come back from military deployment. It was spur-of-the-moment decision and a made-in-Oakland moment.
He looked like an inspired artist as he put together the beautiful bouquet. It’s such a treat to watch Dan in action! Maybe it’s because he has owned his shop for 20 years. Let’s put it this way: It’s quite clear he has a love for his customers, his work, and Oakland. And all that positive energy goes into every single bouquet arrangement.
I can’t believe I am going to say this but Dan Lasack helps Downtown Oakland to flourish! I guess that’s what all indie businesses do too.
