Whatever the gift-giving challenge, we have the solution: Holiday Season shopping in Oakland! Welcome to our Special Holiday Edition Oakland Shopping Guide. We hope it will serve as your go-to resource for your local Holiday Shopping needs. Everyday, we’ll continue to search for and compile all the Indie sales, classes, parties, and gift ideas that we can find! So, be sure to check back for updates. To date, we think we’ve collected over 60 local indie events. 

And if you have tips, send them our way! Our mission is to inspire you to shop local this Season–even if it’s just a little more often than you have in the past! 

We know it’s that time of year to get into the gift shopping hustle that many of us struggle with or even dread. There are countless reasons why we stress. Maybe, for once, we don’t want to be the aunt who gives the notoriously ugly sweater. Or, our in-laws are impossible because they have everything already. We definitely know our partners inside and out… except when it comes to knowing what they want. And, what does one buy somebody that we don’t even know? Perhaps this is a tight budget time. Finally, it could just be that we just want our recipient to experience great joy as they open their gift.

So skip the e-commerce behemoths, big box giants, and pedestrian national retailers. Instead, you can buy cool, thoughtful, meaningful gifts right here in #oaklandca. 

When we #buylocal, it’s an economic, social, and environmental investment in ourselves and our city. Most of all, when we #shopoakland, it enriches our own lives and the lives of those around us. May we say it is a gift to each other? Too late, we said it.

12/19. EVENT. Oakland Art Library is having an event that can help you get ready for the holidays. The event “is featuring “our first ever Holiday Bazaar! We will have several of our Art Library artists set up with tables full of their wares for our holiday shopping. Plus over 30 artists on display with work available to borrow..or buy! We will also have Crooked City Cider!!! in the house pouring drinks for us again. Come for free, RSVP on our website. “

12/21. EVENT. ctrlshft collective says “Save the date for our first ever craft fair! Join us on Saturday December 21st from 12-5pm for some holiday and end of the year gifts! Announcing an amazing lineup of local women, queer, and poc artists and creators soon

12/21 11am-5pm Head West Marketplace is hosting its LAST HEAD WEST OF 2019 NOOOOOOO. But yes. So, let’s PACK THE HOUSE (INDOORS) for our final marketplace of the year — giving space for 60+ Makers, Merchants + Mavericks. Location: Peralta Street Warehouses (INDOORS), 2435 Peralta Street | West Oakland. The good stuff: free entry, kid + pet friendly, Neapolitan Pizza by @luciasberkeley, cold drinks by @revivekombucha, hot drinks by @mother.tongue.coffee, sweet drinks by @harmlessharvest, and sweet treats by @sosbakeshop. It’s a shop small extravaganza with over 60 small brands and local businesses. When we all shop local it is an economic, social, cultural, and environmental investment in our communities! YAY. 

12/22. CAUSE. We love good causes. And while we’re all running around getting ready for the Holidays next week, let’s try and remember the people who need our help in Oaktown. We have so much power to do good, positive things. We all have the power to change the world for the better, one coat at a time.

1/4 11am-4pm. She Win We Win Marketplace is a celebration of women entrepreneurs. They say “shop with your Soul sisters” and we think that is a fantastic idea. There are a lot of talented women preparing for this post Holiday event. We think it will be incredibly uplifting after the hustle of the Holiday Season. 507 55th St. (at Telegraph), Oakland CA, 94609.

1/11 – 1/12 10 – 5pm Oakland Chinatown Lunar New Year Bazaar! The 29th Annual LNY Bazaar is a FREE annual event hosted in the heart of Oakland’s Chinatown on 9th St. and Franklin St. to celebrate Chinese New Year. A live cultural entertainment stage with continuous live performances is featured along with over 80 vendors selling traditional new years decorations??, flowers?, gifts, candies?, and other items of interest. So come on out that weekend to celebrate Chinese New Year (1/25) and buy goodies for you and family and friends

1/20. EVENT. Women’s March Oakland is excited to announce that WMO 2020 is co-hosting with 3 outstanding organizations. First up is @BWOPA. They have been a key partner from the beginning and are returning to co-host #WomensMarchOakland for the 2nd year. Black Women Organized for Political Action activates, motivates, promotes, supports and educates African-American women about the political process, encourages involvement, and affirms their commitment to, and solving of, those problems affecting the African-American community. 2/23. The Third Annual Black Joy Parade. It’s going to be bigger and even better. More to come but get this event in your calendar!

NOW. GIFT IDEAS. Bay Grape is has some great gift ideas for our wino friends: A Food & Wine Pairings Class Series! It will run for Sundays January 12-February 9 2-3pm. NOW. GIFT IDEAS. Bay-Made is more than that. It’s also You-Made, and Kid-Made. So, if you’re looking for some gift inspirations, they can help. NOW. GIFT IDEAS. Bella Ceramica. There’s this little gem of a shop on Piedmont Ave with an expansive selection of finely made Italian Ceramics. We fell in love with this moose. And the best part of it is owner Claudio Luporini. You’ll want to take him home as a gift too. He’s a one-of-a-kind just like his collection.

NOW. GIFT IDEAS. Bella Vita has some holiday gift shopping inspirations as well. Shop for the kids and find some books, clothes, games, and more. Shop for something for yourself. NOW. GIFT IDEAS. Field Day and Friends is worth a trip for refreshing the Holiday Season Wardrobe. But also for gift shopping. 12/13. SALE. GIFT IDEAS. id Oakland Enjoy 15% off! Time to visit this shop on 17th St, iD. It’s for anyone with a discerning taste for men’s or women’s streetwear. Also, super helpful if you NEED to transform a boyfriend or husband’s closet with cooler jeans, jackets, hoodies, t-shirts, shirts, and kicks (sneakers). Style. Loving this hoodie. Is anyone Prada me? LOL. 

NOW. GIFT IDEAS. Issues Shop had a dream a little over 10 years ago to bring independent print media to the Oakland community. And here they are on Piedmont Ave living their dream. Speaking of dreams, it is a dream to go there and peruse the (at least) hundreds of magazines that they sell from all over the world. We think the gift of independent print media is a perfect for the independent thinker… from an independent shop… We could go on…

NOW. GIFT IDEAS. It’s Your Move Games has plenty to offer if you have gamers in your life. Check out their new rare and out of print section! Plus all their other games. This place is for Gamers. About KOSA: Proprietor, Elaine Hamblin, of Kosa Arts is the matriarch of the marketplace. And, her shop is a mini emporium with an eclectic range of high quality goods, all meticulously curated. We think her mission is to make life more beautiful for her customers.

12/22 3-7pm. EVENT. Maker’s Loft! This is a great opportunity for you and your family (or friends) to get together for a holiday portrait for 2019! They’re partnering with local photographer @xilophotography who will be setting up a Pop-Up Studio in the back room decked out with in Holiday vibez! Each session is 15 minutes of shooting + 1 high resolution image delivered the next day via email. NOW. GIFT IDEAS. Maple Street Denim is so proud to serve Oakland. And quite frankly, we’re so glad to have this classic denim emporium here in The Town. We thank proprietor, Julie Harleman, for having the vision and courage to open this special (and ever so rare) shop. Here’s why: Julie, is a denim aficionado who’s developed a deep expertise through years of work in denim retail. She’s always looking for unique statement labels. But, we think giving the gift of a day of art gallery explorations with your loved one who is inspired by art, is a great plan. Take them on an Oakland Art Gallery tour in search of their next work of art for their personal collection. Enjoy some food and beverages at Oakland’s best indie restaurants too. Is it a date? 12/14. EVENT. But, perhaps more importantly, Mischief is getting ready to Holiday Party. Here’s what they have to say about it: This Saturday! We’re hosting our monthly Family Happy Hour, but amping it up a bit for the holidays… We’ll have hot apple cider (with an optional dash of brandy for those over 21), plus hard kombucha, beer, sparkling water, and more… and of course we’ll have a baby and toddler play zone, plus paper ornament crafting and a coloring station for the older kiddos. Regular Events

WINE TASTINGS: Every week, many local independent wine merchants host WINE TASTING EVENTS. Wow! It’s better than having to  drive 2 hours ++ and you get to experience more variety. Check with a shop near you like: Bay Grape, Downtown Wine Merchants, Farmstead Cheeses and Wines, Minimo Wine Shop, Oakland Yard Wine Shop, and Wine on Piedmont.

Merchants A through M

Alchemy Bottle Shop has some amazing classes and events for those who want to learn or perfect the art of Cocktail making. They also do regular tasting events on Saturdays from 2-5pm! So, a lot is happening there. Best to check out their calendar!

Bay-Made: Will help you channel your creative talents. They load their calendar with events so check them out and see what’s inspires you!

Multiple events Blue Door Beads on Piedmont Ave. Are very excited about their workshops and classes. Sign up in store, on their website, or over the phone.  

Many merchants have activities to entertain the kids! It’s Your Move. 

It’s Your Move is the place to be if you are a gamer. They have so many event nights so it is just a matter of your gaming preferences. They are running after school board game classes now on Wednesdays from 3pm – 6pm. Recommended for ages 8-16. This is an adult supervised drop-in class, come straight after school, hang out, relax and play some sweet board games. Come learn new board games or play your old favorites!

It’s best to check out Maker’s Loft Calendar of Events as they have so many different kinds of workshops. They often bring in the makers and designers that they feature in their store to lead classes.

OMG! Mischief hosts one of the most cutest events ever: Little Folkies on Thursdays at 11:30am. OMG, parents bring their 0-5 year-olds and enjoy live music together. And they have another event on Sundays from 3-5pm called Babies + Beers Family Happy Hour(s)! OMG! Please let them know your going so they can plan appropriately!

Merchants N through Z

Rent Event Space! Yes, you can rent the beautiful backyard oasis at Neighbor for your special occasion. They’ve hosted baby showers, birthday celebrations, and engagement parties. They’ve even held a wedding!

Tons of events and classes at Preserved. Workshops from cheesemaking to pickling, jam making, and fermenting, and more! Check with Preserved for their calendar of events. 

Rare Bird always has creative workshops and classes for you to learn new things or hone your already awesome skills. They host parties and corporate events as well. They do it all! It is worth checking out their calendar!

The Raven’s Wing Magical Co. hosts A monthly Astrology Salon every fourth Thursday from 7-9pm. Check with them for all their activities.

Weekly Sundays 10am Tip Top Bike Shop Meet at the shop and take a ride with them on their weekly group ride. All abilities welcome! All abilities and experience levels welcome.

Wednesday Warrior Runs are every week at 6:30 sharp by Transports. Check with them for locations as they change from week to week. P.S. They like to drink beer after the running events!

1/11 – 1/12 10 – 5pm Oakland Chinatown Lunar New Year Bazaar! The 29th Annual LNY Bazaar is a FREE annual event hosted in the heart of Oakland’s Chinatown on 9th St. and Franklin St. to celebrate Chinese New Year. A live cultural entertainment stage with continuous live performances is featured along with over 80 vendors selling traditional new years decorations??, flowers?, gifts, candies?, and other items of interest. So come on out that weekend to celebrate Chinese New Year (1/25) and buy goodies for you and family and friends

2/23 The Third Annual Black Joy Parade. It’s going to be bigger and even better. More to come but get this event in your calendar!
